WASHINGTON: A Muslim flight attendant, Charee Stanley is suspended by Express Jet due to non-serving of alcohol to the passengers.
Stanley says that the authorities of Express jet have suspended her because of refusing to serve alcohol to commuters. She added that she would not compromise with them because she refused to serve alcohol in accordance with Islamic faith.
Media told that in order to get her job back, Stanley filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday.
“It’s an open discrimination. The Carrier had revoked a reasonable arrangement to accommodate my religious beliefs,’’, she said in a complaint with Equal Employment Opportunity.
According to her lawyer Lena Masri, Stanley, 40, was working for Express Jet since 3 years. When she joined this airline, Stanley was not Muslim but she accepted Islam two years ago as her religion. And after knowing that the alcohol is strictly not allowed to consuming and serving too in Islam, she refused to serve it.
“She just wants to fulfill her duty without serving alcohol according to her Islamic faith whereas she has been serving alcohol before accepting Islam,” Masri added.
Masri said it’s incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel free to perform their religious practices“.
